If you're regularly on the UCA campus, a female and have been to the restroom lately, I'm sure you've seen the sexual violence awareness flyers. You may even be like me and assume that these awareness tools were posted by the women's services department. However, if you read the fine print on the bottom of the flyers, you will see that this is not the case. "Your rape joke is not funny" is actually brought to you by the Young Democrats of Arkansas Women's Caucus (YDAR).
The YDAR Women's Caucus organization describes themselves as "a community that educates and encourages women to participate in the political field and address the issue of gender inequality."
Women are not always the only gender being victimized, so it slightly ironic that those focused on gender inequality- fail to place sexual assault awareness flyers in the restroom of both sexes.
The statistics for victims of sexual assault are growing, even more so on college campuses. It is important that we provide victims with resources available, so they know that nonjudgmental help is an option. Rainn.org shares that 68% of sexual assaults are not reported to police. An even more shocking statistic is that approximately four out of five assaults are committed by someone the victim knows. Perhaps the YDAR Women's Caucus approach of reaching women in a more personal environment is deserving of a strategic placement of the year award.
