October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. There are an increasing amount of events available across Arkansas, providing information on this cause.
According to a 2011 report from the Center for Disease Control, “More than 1 in 3 women (35.6%) and more than 1 in 4 men (28.5%) in the United States have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.”
The current Miss Arkansas 2015, Loren McDaniel has been traveling the state speaking to the younger population about healthy relationships. You can see more details in the events section, here.
Domestic Violence is often thought of to claim victim to more women, but this is not always the case. There is actually a new shelter opening in Central Arkansas, with the focus on helping men that have fallen victim to abuse. The important thing is to remember that anyone, male or female, could fall victim to domestic violence. Our focus should be on mental health - for both those that are recovering, as well as those that have found themselves lashing out.
For those in Northwest Arkansas, there is a "Silent Witness Walk" taking place 11am on November 7th, at the Luther George Park. Peace at Home Family Shelter is hosting this walk for the second time, in hopes of bringing awareness to "no excuse for abuse." This is a great way to support the local community.
